Full Moon Party in Thailand: There are about 10,000 to 20,000 people attending every month at this Koh Phangan beach party. It is of course known as the Full Moon Party. International and Thai DJ's are entertaining the party until the crowd go wild. Paint yourself in UV colours and let your body lose control. The DJ's play all kinds of music; techno, trance, goa, drum n' bass, dub, reggae, commercial hits, house etc. on about 15 sound systems along Haad Rin beach. There are also many small tables on the beach where you can sit down with your friends or meet new friends from all corners of the globe. You can order drinks and food from the restaurants and bars next to the Haad Rin Nok beach.
The party was originally a small affair with a small number of backpacking travellers dancing through the night of the full moon, mainly to psychedelic trance music. Originally, the music was some tapes coming from Goa'Party (India), and the first Full Moon Party was improvised at a wooden disco not far from the beach in June 1987. The Full Moon Party gained fame quickly through word of mouth, and the event now draws a crowd in excess of 10,000 every full moon evening. The party carries on until the sun rises the next day. All the bars on the sunset beach of Haad Rin town stay open and play music such as R&B, drum and bass, house and reggae. The event has become a part of the itinerary of many travellers to Asia. Entry to the event is completely free. In recent years, local entrepreneurs have attempted to expand upon the event with spinoffs like the Half Moon Party and Black Moon Party.
Koh Phangan is a very special place, there are few places in this world where you can live out your desert island dreams of palm trees and white sand beaches, and still have a blinding night out at a rocking party every month. With the global notoriety that the Full Moon Party has gained as being one of the biggest and best beach bashes in the world, we get more than our fair share of hedonists gracing our shores. Each year the scene here grows with the ever-increasing number of party faithful that return, bringing their mates and spreading the vibe
The Full Moon parties on Koh Pha Ngan are free and well organised by the locals, attracting top DJs from Bangkok and abroad. The beach is decked out in luminous colours and a whole troupe of performers, fire-eaters, dancers, nutters and drunken or stoned people add to the atmosphere. There is also a strong police presence, and they actively search people randomly and prosecute drug offenders, so the drug culture is limited. Thai officials take a hard line on illegal drugs, including marijuana, and regularly target Koh Pha Ngan.

Where is the full moon party?
The Full Moon Party takes place at Haad Rin beach on Koh Phangan island which is located in Jangwat (province) Suratthani in the Southern Gulf of Thailand and is part of the group of islands that make up the Samui Archipelago; a group of over 40 islands fashioned in granite from age old igneous formations. The provincial capital is also called Suratthani and acts as the main overland transport hub for the islands. Koh Phangan is 70kms from the mainland and approximately 12kms away from Koh Samui which acts as the main air-link to Koh Phangan.

How to get to the full moon party?
Koh Phangan is most easily accessed via Koh Samui Airport though it is slightly cheaper to fly to the regional transport hub of Suratthani. From Koh Samui a fast boat takes only 30 minutes whereas the journey from the mainland takes around seven times longer. If you come overland, the overnight train is the best option with a first class sleeper carriage ideal for families. Buses are the most economic choice with a trip from Bangkok costing only about 650 Baht, all the way to Koh Phangan. Ferry services are more or less hourly throughout the day from Koh Samui and every couple of hours from the mainland; several boats also go regularly from Koh Tao.

What should be aware?
Our advice is don't be tempted by drugs; this island has had a bad reputation for a long time and the open taking of drugs is not tolerated. Thailand has also had a crackdown and the police are very hot on stopping the problem. The days are gone when you could buy your way out for a few dollars and the penalties in Thailand are harsh to say the least - expect a hefty fine and possibly an extended jail term if caught.
Police are cracking down on the drug scene at full moon parties. They tend to stop and search travellers for drugs on the roads to Hat Rin. Undercover police go to the party to try to catch people dealing or taking drugs. Drug-taking in Thailand holds stiff penalties and really isn't worth it. See Thailand drugs for more details. If partying all night, make sure you eat well and drink lots of water. Each year several people die from going into the sea under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol so have a good time but don't overdo things. Dodgy ecstasy tablets and mushroom (hallucinogenic) omelettes can result in a trip to the hospital.

- Take a copy of your ID, not the original and leaves your valuables in the resort safe
- Don't be tempted to take bags as they are easily fogetten after a few buckets.
- Wear shoes because bottles sometimes break on the beach.
- It gets hot very quickly in the morning , so cover up from the sun to avoid getting burn.
